Willem Johannes Tolken known as “oom Tollie”, owner of TOLKENS SLAGTERY was the first generation of this business. In 1957 Sarel Nicholas Carstens took over the business from his father-in-law when Willem passed away in 1956.
With hard work and dedication from him and his wife Mercia Carstens neé Tolken at TOLKENS SLAGTERY in Saldanha Bay, the business grew from strength to strength. 16 years later in 1973 Sarel and Mercia registered Cartol Beleggings Pty Ltd and property was bought in Saldanha main road where Cartol was later built. Sarel’s two eldest sons Albie and Wian Carstens started phasing into the business and both received diplomas at the Witwatersrand Technicon in the meat industry. They then became the 3rd generation of this family-owned business.
The Cartol family then opened their own abattoir on 2 February 1987 in the industrial area of Saldanha Bay. Sarel had his own farms on the West Coast, where his son Wian showed many interests in farming and started running the abattoir division of Cartol. Albie was mainly situated at the butchery of Cartol. Sarel Carstens passed away in 1994 and the two sons took the company to new heights.

The 4th generation of Cartol Beleggings Pty Ltd is made up of Wian’s three sons Nicholas and Hans Eckart Carstens that is situated at the abattoir while Stephan Carstens handles the Agricultural side on his father’s farms. Albie’s two children is phasing into the butchery side of the business Albie Jnr, and Mercia Carstens. Cartol strives to deliver the best product to our customers, our meat is sourced from as far as Namibia as well as locally. Cartol Beleggings Pty Ltd offers work to over 180 people and we as the Carstens family would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support.
